How to Convert PDF Image to Word

Converting a text-based PDF document to Word can be a simple process. The same cannot be said however of a PDF document that has been saved in image format. This can be a PDF document that was scanned or created with numerous images that are part of the text.

But this doesn't mean that a scanned or image-rich PDF document cannot be converted to Word. You just need a converter - UPDF that has OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities to extract the content and convert the PDF to an editable format like Word. Here, we show you how to do that in 2 ways.

Method 1. How to Convert PDF Image to Word

One of the best PDF converters to use if you have a scanned PDF image is UPDF. This is a complete PDF conversion tool that will easily and very accurately convert any PDF document to most of the popular document formats including Word, Excel, PPT, Text, and even image formats.

But the feature that can help you convert a PDF image to Word is the OCR module in UPDF. Unlike other similar tools, the OCR module you find on UPDF is highly sensitive, making it easier to detect the text within the image and convert the content to Word.

It has a high conversion accuracy and supports more than 20+ languages. Here's how to use the OCR function in UPDF to convert your PDF image to Word:

Step 1: Import the Image PDF Files

Start by installing UPDF onto your computer. Open the program after installation and then import the PDF files you want to convert.

Importing the PDF files can be done in one of two ways: you can click on the "Open File" button and browse your computer for the PDF file. Or you can drag and drop the PDF files into this window.

Step 3: Convert PDF Image to Word

Click "Export" to begin the conversion.

Method 2. How to Convert PDF Image to Word Online

You might also be able to use an online tool like Smallpdf to convert a PDF image to Word. Online tools are often easily accessible since you don't have to install any programs on your computer to use them. But while converting a regular PDF document to Word using Smallpdf is free, you will need to create an account or purchase the premium version to use this tool's OCR function.

But Smallpdf is relatively easy to use. Just follow these simple steps:

  • Step 1: Go to the PDF Converter tool of Smallpdf.
  • Step 2: Drag and drop the PDF file into Smallpdf to import it. You can also click on "Upload" to browse for the file.
  • Step 3: Click on the "convert with OCR" option. This feature will only be available if you have the premium version of Smallpdf.
  • Step 4: The conversion process will begin immediately and, in a few seconds, you should be able to download your editable Word file.

Smallpdf does however have a number of limitations that you may want to be aware of. For example, the file size of the PDF that you can upload is limited to 5GB. This may be limiting if the images in your PDF are in high resolution as they can be very large. So UPDF is still your best choice for converting PDF documents.
