In our tests, table content remained visible, but some labels were split or translated awkwardly, and multi-column text occasionally lost sentence flow. Text embedded in scanned images may not be translated reliably. It's adequate for understanding a document's content, but less suitable when you need a polished, publication-ready translated PDF.

2. Canva Translate

Canva's Online Document Translator supports translating​ up to 50 pages into multiple languages, and is handy if the PDF is something you also want to redesign. Upload the PDF to Canva's Online Document Translator, choose the target language, and select Translate page > Translate.

Where it stops: the free allowance is only a trial, and unlimited translation requires Canva Pro. Each translation run is also limited to 2,000 characters. Canva doesn't provide OCR for scanned PDFs, so image-based Kannada documents won't translate. In our Kannada test, translation quality was inconsistent: some headings, table labels, and body text were mistranslated or partially corrupted, even when the original document displayed correctly. Canva is less reliable for accurate translation of Kannada-language PDFs.

3. ChatGPT

If you already use ChatGPT, it's a clean, ad-free way to translate Kannada PDF content — LLM translation handles Kannada context and idiom noticeably better than classic machine-translation engines, which matters for legal phrasing in agreements and notices (Claude and Gemini behave much the same). Upload the PDF and prompt: "Translate this document from Kannada to English PDF. Please preserve the original layout, tables, headings, and formatting.“ ChatGPT can even return an actual file.

Where it stops: the layout is rebuilt rather than preserved. The document structure usually survives, but original fonts, precise positioning, stamps, signatures, and other visual elements may not carry over automatically, so the result is a clean reconstruction rather than a page-faithful replica. That matters for contracts, forms, and agreements where layout, seals, or signature placement have legal significance. Free-tier upload and usage limits can vary over time, and very long documents may need to be translated in sections. One more thing we noticed during testing: when source text is unclear, damaged, or poorly scanned, the AI may reconstruct passages from context rather than translate them literally. This often improves readability, but important legal, financial, or technical wording should always be verified against the original document.

In our Kannada test, ChatGPT delivered the most accurate translation, while Google Translate stayed closest to the source wording. The file is a scan — or just a photo (RTC/Pahani land records, a WhatsApp picture of a notice). Plain translators see an image, not text. The document mixes Kannada and English. Full-document translators may pass English passages through unchanged or, in mixed scanned files, translate only the native text layer.
