  • 1. Why Can't I Find the AI Assistant Icon?

    If you cannot find the AI Assistant icon, it could be due to one of the following reasons:

    • 1.You might not know where the AI Assistant icon is. On desktop, open any PDF file in UPDF, then go to the top-right menu and click the AI Assistant icon to open it. On iOS or Android, open UPDF, and you’ll find UPDF AI on the right side of the bottom toolbar.
    • 2. You are using an older version of UPDF—Mac versions earlier than 1.6.3 and Windows versions earlier than 1.6.5. In these versions, the AI Assistant icon will not appear. To access the AI Assistant features, update UPDF by going to Profile icon > UPDF V... > Check for Updates..
  • 2. How to Upload Another PDF File in Asking Mode in AI Assistant?

    If you're using the AI Assistant within the UPDF app, you can't directly upload a new PDF in Ask PDF mode—it only analyzes the currently open PDF. To switch PDFs, close the current one, open the new PDF, then click the "AI Assistant" icon, select "Ask PDF," and click "Chat with PDF" to upload and analyze it.
    For the online version, you can upload a new PDF by clicking the "Chat History" icon in the top-left corner, then selecting "New Chat with PDF" to upload another PDF.
  • 3. Can I summarize, translate, or chat with multiple PDFs at once?

    Yes, but multi-file chat is only available in the UPDF AI Online. This feature allows you to chat with multiple PDFs by creating collections.
    The AI assistant in UPDF for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android does not currently support multi-file chat. However, on desktop versions, you can use the batch combine feature to merge multiple PDFs into a single file and chat with the combined document to achieve similar results.
  • 4. Why Am I in Free Trial Version for AI Assistant When I Already Bought UPDF Pro?

    AI Assistant is not included in the UPDF Pro Plan. That is why you are in the free trial version of AI Assistant when you already have UPDF Pro. If you need to use AI Assistant Pro, you need to upgrade to AI Assistant Pro.
  • 5. Will AI Assistant Still be Charged Annually if I Buy a Lifetime UPDF with AI?

    If you buy a lifetime UPDF and the AI Assistant Pro with an Annual plan, you will be charged annually for AI Assistant.
  • 6. How to Cancel AI Assistant Subscription?

  • 7. What Are the Differences Between Chat Mode and Ask PDF Mode?

    Chat mode allows you to ask anything, while Ask PDF only answers the questions about the PDF you uploaded.
  • 8. What are the AI Assistant limitations for the Free Trial Version?

    If you are using AI Assistant free trial version, you can only upload 5 PDF files in Ask PDF mode. And the PDF file size is limited to 100MB for each one and each PDF can have at most 100 pages. And when you communicate with AI Assistant, you can only send 100 messages.
  • 9. What benefits are included in the paid AI Assistant version?

    Upgrading to the paid version of UPDF AI Assistant offers the following benefits: Upload unlimited PDF files per month, support for PDFs up to 2GB in the UPDF app (or 100MB in the online version), unlimited pages per file, and unlimited messages for communication.
  • 10. Is it necessary to purchase AI Assistant separately for use on various platforms?

    No, you don't need to purchase the AI Assistant separately for each platform. Buy it once and use it on multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, and web) with a single account. The AI benefits apply across all five platforms, so any remaining benefits from your plan can be used on other devices.
  • 11. Can I Upload PDF after UPDF Cloud Storage is Full?

    If your storage is full, you can delete some files from the UPDF Cloud to upload more PDF files again.
  • 12. What is the difference between the UPDF app and the AI Assistant Online?

    The UPDF app is downloadable software that provides a range of PDF editing tools and integrated AI features. In contrast, the AI Assistant Online offers AI functionality accessible through a browser without requiring installation, with a focus on tasks such as summarizing and translating PDF content.
    Both versions share the AI benefits in one UPDF account. For example, if you have got the free trial of AI Assistant and have uploaded one PDF to it for analysis within the app, then you are only allowed to upload four more PDF files in the web version, as the total free uploads allowed are five.
  • 13. How does the AI Assistant compare to Adobe Acrobat AI?

    Compared to other AI PDF tools like Adobe Acrobat, UPDF stands out due to several key advantages:

    • 1. UPDF's integrated AI assistant handles larger files and more pages. Adobe Acrobat AI can only work with up to 25MB and 120 pages. UPDF's AI assistant can handle 100MB-2GB and 100-unlimited pages per PDF, depending on the plan.
    • 2. It supports analyzing scanned PDF documents. Simply follow the prompt to perform the OCR process first.
    • 3. Analyzes and translates documents in almost all languages in the world, unlike Adobe Acrobat AI which only supports English.
    • 4. Aside from the conventional AI chat mode, UPDF AI Assistant also offers Deep Think Mode (powered by the full-size DeepSeek R1), allowing users to ask inferential questions and receive more in-depth answers. In contrast, Adobe Acrobat AI only provides a standard AI chat experience, lacking an advanced reasoning mode like Deep Think.
  • 14. How does the AI Assistant compare to tools such as ChatPDF for engaging and chatting with PDFs?

    Compared to other PDF chatting tools like ChatPDF, there are several significant benefits to using UPDF's AI assistant:

    • 1. The AI Assistant tool has two modes: Ask PDF and Chat. Users can ask questions related to the content of their PDFs. They can also chat with AI on topics beyond the scope of the PDFs.

  • 15. What AI models does the AI assistant in UPDF use?

    Currently, it supports GPT-5 and DeepSeek R1 (full-size) models. By default, GPT-5 is used, but users can seamlessly switch to DeepSeek R1 in Chat mode to leverage its unique strengths. However, in Ask PDF mode, only GPT-5 is available at this time.
  • 16. How does UPDF ensure the privacy and security of my documents and AI conversations?

    User privacy and security are at the top of UPDF's agenda. We protect your documents, data, and AI conversations by:

    • 1. Ensuring conversations are visible only to the account owner.
    • 2. Allowing users to export their AI conversations.
    • 3. Not storing any conversation data.

  • 17. Does the AI Agent have a page limit for auto-bookmarking?

    No, there is no hard limit on the total page count — our AI Agent is built to process both 10-page briefs and 1,000+ page reports in seconds. Instead of charging by the full document length, your AI Questions balance is deducted based only on the actual number 1 of pages where titles are detected and generated as bookmarks. For example, in a 10-page document, if the AI recognizes headings on only pages 1, 3, and 5, your total balance will only be reduced by 3 questions, ensuring you are not charged for pages without relevant content.   • 18. Can UPDF AI Agent generate bookmarks for scanned PDFs?

    Yes. By using UPDF's OCR first to recognize the text layer, the AI Agent can then accurately analyze the layout and build a structured outline for any scanned document.
  • 19. Will the AI-generated bookmarks be saved permanently in my PDF?

    Absolutely. These are 100% native PDF bookmarks. Once generated, they are embedded into the file and remain accessible in any other PDF reader (such as Adobe Acrobat or Chrome).
  • 20. Can I change the language of the outline if my PDF is in another language?

    Yes. This is one of our core strengths. You can perform cross-language generation—for example, analyzing a Japanese technical manual and outputting a professional English navigation tree.
  • 21. In which language will the AI bookmark summaries be generated?

    The output language is completely up to you. The UPDF AI Agent generates summaries based on your personal settings. If you set the "AI Output Language" to English in the Settings menu, the agent will deliver your 3-sentence essence in English, regardless of the document's original language.
  • 22. Is the 3-sentence AI bookmark summary accurate for complex technical documents?

    The output language is completely up to you. The UPDF AI Agent generates summaries based on your personal settings. If you set the "AI Output Language" to English in the Settings menu, the agent will deliver your 3-sentence essence in English, regardless of the document's original language.
  • 23. How are AI credits consumed when generating watermarks, stickers, backgrounds, or stamps?

    Each generation creates three PNG images, and one AI credit is used per image, so a full generation normally costs 3 AI credits. Only the actual number of successfully generated images will be deducted. Credits are charged only after generation finishes. If you stop the process early, no credits will be used. You can check your remaining credits in UPDF, or upgrade your plan on the Pricing Page for more usage.
  • 24. Is it possible to save an AI-generated watermark, sticker, background or stamp for use in future documents?

    Yes. When the AI generates your three options, you can click the Download icon on any image to save it as a high-resolution PNG file to your computer. Additionally, you can click the Star icon to add the design to your "Starred" library. This makes it a permanent favourite that you can quickly apply to future documents without having to regenerate it.
  • 25. Do I need an internet connection to AI-generate watermarks, stickers, backgrounds, or stamps?

    Yes. Please ensure your internet connection remains active during the generation process. If the connection is interrupted, the generation may fail.
  • 26. What happens if I close the AI generation window during the generation process?

    The AI generation window must remain open for the process to complete. If you close the window, the generation will be interrupted.
  • 27. Will my generated watermarks, stickers, backgrounds and stamps be saved automatically?

    No. Generated images are not saved automatically when you close the window. To keep a design, please download or star it before exiting.
  • 28. Can the AI-generated stickers be adjusted after being added to a PDF?

    Yes. After inserting a sticker, you can click it to adjust settings like Flip Horizontal/Vertical and Opacity, or use Copy and Remove to manage it. You can also add a Note for comments. Right-clicking the sticker provides additional options, including Reply for discussions and Align to help position it within your document layout.
  • 29. Can I adjust the transparency of the AI-generated background so it doesn't hide my text?

    Absolutely. After adding the background to your PDF, use the Opacity slider in the right-hand settings panel. You can lower the opacity (for example, to 20% or 30%) to create a light texture that ensures your document text remains perfectly legible.
  • 30. Are AI-generated stamps compatible with other PDF readers?

    Yes. Once applied, the stamp becomes a permanent part of the PDF file and will be visible in other PDF readers, including mainstream ones like Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • 31. Can I apply an AI-generated watermark to just a few specific pages?

    Yes. In the Edit Watermark panel, you can define a specific Page Range so the watermark only appears on the pages you choose.
  • 32. Can I change whether the AI-generated watermark appears behind or in front of the text?

    Yes. Under the Settings menu in the right-hand panel, you can choose to place the watermark on the Top layer (over the text) or Bottom layer (behind the text).
  • 33. Can I create a "tiled" effect using an AI-generated watermark to cover the whole page?

    After generating your AI watermark and adding it to the PDF, look under the Layout section in the right-hand panel. You can switch the layout from "Single" to "Grid" to create a repeating pattern.
  • 34. What types of watermarks can AI create?

    UPDF AI Agent provides preset watermark tags across several categories, including office & administrative, copyright & legal, visual design, and creative styles. You can also use custom text prompts to generate personalised and unique watermarks for your documents.
  • 35. What specific issues can the AI agent detect during a page check?

    The AI agent automatically scans your document for a variety of formatting and organizational issues, including blank pages, scanned pages that need to be made editable (perform OCR), inverted page orientation (upside-down or sideways pages), document continuity breaks in page numbering, invalid pages containing shadows or size inconsistencies, pages with annotations or comments.
  • 36. How do I view the issues the AI agent has found during a page check?

    Once the scan is complete, all identified issues will appear in the AI Check Pages panel on the right side of the screen. Each item in the list will include a short description of the problem and an Action button to resolve it.
  • 37. Once the AI Agent detects specific page issues, can I review them before applying the suggested fixes?

    Yes. You can click on any specific item in the AI-generated list to instantly jump to that exact page in your document. This allows you to manually verify the issue before choosing to fix it.
  • 38. Does the AI fix all page issues automatically?

    It depends on the issue. For some problems, like blank pages, the AI provides a Delete button to remove them automatically. For others, like reversed pages, the AI provides a Check button that directs you to the page so you can manually adjust the rotation. For scanned pages, it will prompt you to run the OCR tool.
  • 39. How do I know when my document is fully optimized?

    After addressing the suggested fixes, you can run the AI Check Pages tool again. If all issues are resolved, they will disappear from the list, and a dialogue box will notify you that the document is "flawless".
  • 40. Can I still organize my pages manually?

    Absolutely. While the AI tool is designed to save time by highlighting errors, UPDF still supports full manual page organization if you prefer to rearrange, rotate, or delete pages yourself.
